We have different ways of getting your NISS.
For To obtain the Social Security Number (Número de Segurança Social, NISS) in Portugal, you usually need: a passport, NIF (individual tax number), and proof of your professional status (employment contract, self-employment certificate, etc.)
However, we can obtain your NISS even if you only have your passport and NIF.
If you're a holder of a D visa, then the procedure can be cheaper, but may take longer.
Also, in some cases the procedure can be simplified if you have a proof of your professional status: If you are employed -- a copy of your employment contract. If you are self-employed -- your business registration certificate and contracts with clients.
Additional documents (in some cases):
• Rental contract: Sometimes proof of residence is required, such as a rental agreement.
• Certificate from Junta de Freguesia: Alternatively, you can provide a certificate from the local parish administration (Junta de Freguesia), signed by two neighbor witnesses confirming that you actually live at the address.
• Utility bills: If you don’t have the certificate, you can provide utility bills (gas, water, electricity) in your name.
This summary reflects the typical documentation requirements for applying for a NISS in Portugal, but we can usually obtain your NISS with just a passport and NIF.
